Can you imagine fibers made from wood? Then it’s time to don some MERINO COOL! Because MERINO COOL is made from a mixture of the finest merino wool and TENCEL™. TENCEL™ is a natural cellulose fiber made from the raw material eucalyptus wood. This type of wood is particularly sustainable and is grown on FSC-certified wood farms in South Africa.
It grows very quickly but does not require any artificial irrigation and is not genetically modified. In contrast to cotton, TENCEL™ has an excellent environmental balance. 6m² of soil will only yield enough cotton to make one shirt, whilst 10 shirts can be made from the same measure of TENCEL™. The TENCEL™ fibers are mixed with pure merino wool, the most functional natural fiber.

We have been using the MERINO COOL natural fiber combination since summer 2011, primarily for its cooling qualities. TENCEL™ is a brand of Lenzing AG and was created in 1992. The cellulose fiber is perfectly complemented by merino wool. Both fibers are odor neutralizing, thermo- and moisture-regulating, as well as extra soft.


MERINO COOL combines the finest merino wool and the natural fiber TENCEL™. The cellulose required to produce the fiber is obtained from sustainably cultivated eucalyptus wood. This wood grows particularly quickly and is planted at FSC‑certified wood farms without any genetic modification or artificial irrigation. What makes the TENCEL™ production procedure so pioneering is the environmentally-friendly, complete production cycle. Other than wood and water, a solvent is the only thing needed to produce the fiber. Even this can be almost 100% recycled so that no pollutants damage the environment or remain in the fiber. The production process has received the ‘European Award for the Environment’ from the European Union.


MOISTURE CONTENT: The higher the natural moisture content in the fiber core, the more refreshing a fiber feels! The basic moisture content of TENCEL™ is 13% - compared to Polyester’s content of just 1%. As TENCEL™ is hydrophilic, the fiber surface remains dry and feels pleasantly cool but not damp.

EVAPORATIVE COOLNESS: TENCEL™ dries extremely quickly. The evaporative coolness generated during the drying process maintains the body at an ideal temperature without it feeling damp. The positive consequences are additional performance and greater comfort.

GENTLY COOLING: the smoother the fiber surface, the cooler the feel. Compared with the rippled surface of cotton, TENCEL™ has a great deal more contact with the skin and therefore feels cooler.
Odor bacteria require a damp fiber surface to develop. The TENCEL™ fiber transports moisture straight into the fiber core, keeping the fiber surface dry. As bacteria need moisture to grow, up to 2000 times less bacteria grow on TENCEL™ than on synthetic fibers!
TENCEL™ fiber is based on the same functional mechanisms as Merino wool. It can absorb huge amounts of moisture while the fiber surface still remains dry. Nanofibrils, a network of sub-microscopic channels, quickly and evenly direct the moisture into the fiber core.
The smooth surface and uniform fiber structure make TENCEL™ a particularly stabile fiber. This becomes evident thanks to the high restistance to pilling and tearing.
If MERINO COOL should start to smell or become dirty, it is really easy to clean. Simply machine wash with coloreds at 40°, then leave to dry on a clothes rack – it’s as simple as that. Just like for most functional clothing, you should avoid dry cleaning, ironing, dryers, and spin dryers.

TENCEL™ has a fiber surface which is so unbelievably smooth and a structure which is so soft that it has an extremely gentle feel. What’s more, this is also a reason for the cool touch: the more contact a fiber has with the skin, the cooler it feels. And, like TENCEL™, merino wool doesn’t itch! At 18–19 microns (one micron = one-thousandth of a millimeter), the fine wool fibers are so thin that they are well below the human itching threshold of 25 microns. And for anyone who still believes that wool itches (because they are constantly reminded of the woolen jumpers their grandma used to knit), we have developed special versions (such as MERINO SUPERSOFT and MERINO COMPETITION). With these combinations, other types of fibers are in contact with the skin (Lenzing Modal made from beech wood cellulose – MERINO SUPERSOFT) or else we have mixed in a small amount of synthetic fibers (MERINO COMPETITION)
Sheep grow a new coat twice a year, just as eucalyptus wood, the raw material for TENCEL™, also regrows. Although this takes somewhat longer than for sheep, it is 10 times more ecological than cotton: This means that 6m² of soil will only yield enough cotton to make one T-shirt but enough TENCEL™ to make ten T-shirts. Also, cotton needs 10-20 times as much water, often requires the use of pesticides, and takes up large areas in which food could be grown.









As a manufacturer of alpine sports equipment and as a team of keen alpinists ourselves, the environment and the conditions in which our products are manufactured are particularly important to us. That’s why we work with renowned suppliers (e.g. Lenzing / Austria, Toray / Japan or schoeller / Switzerland), who are just as committed to environmental protection and fair working conditions as we are, and who share our ethical values. Due to short transport distances, as well as increasing legal restrictions, more and more of our products are manufactured in Europe. As you will notice when browsing our product range, we have marked all of these products with our own logo – and there are quite a few of them. In addition to joint research with our suppliers to constantly develop new environmentally friendly production methods which have as little impact on the environment as possible, we also support ZDHC, a working group whose objective is to help lead the industry towards zero discharge of hazardous chemicals by the year 2020. Two examples of future-oriented actions we have taken are the elimination of the use of C8 PFCs in the fall of 2011, after they were classified as critical, as well as the use of PFC-free membranes in the hardshell sector. Ultimately, it is our view that sustainability primarily arises from high quality and its associated product durability, as well as from the use of natural raw materials such as wool or cellulose fibers.
